A Special Sitting of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly wAS held ON Wednesday evening 19th November 2014, to present awards to the 25 Most Remarkable Teens for 2014 in the twin-island Federation.
Following the formal entry of the Speaker, the Hon. Curtis Martin, and a message from the Governor General His Excellency Sir Edmund Lawrence,
Speaker Martin delivered words of welcome and Minister of Youth, the Hon. Glenn Phillip made a statement outlining the development of the program as a special initiative of his Ministry, in which 25 remarkable teens were selected from over 100 nominees.
The Public Business of the Special Sitting took the form of the reading of the profiles of this year’s shinning stars by some of the Remarkable Teens of 2013 and presentation of the 2014 awards by the parliamentarians.
Originally, all parlimentarians from both sides of the House were scheduled to make presentations to the deserving youth from St.Kitts-Nevis.In the end it was the SKNLP representatives, led by PM Douglas who bestowed the honours on the 25 remarkable teens.
Meanwhile Team Unity for a second straight year boycotted the event, citing “political and economic upheaval” in the federation. In a statement released by Team Unity’s federal opposition leader, Mark Brantley claimed they would not attend because “we have to date on principle embarked on a programme of non participation in the affairs of a dysfunctional Parliament”.
GMSKN host Maurice Flanders on Thursdays GMSKN talk show on Freedom Fm, recorded his tremendous disappointment in the Team Unity representatives in the National Assembly for not showing up in solidarity with the youths of SKN. Nine young people from Nevis were honoured in the Federal Parliament last night as Remarkable Teens and our Premier and Deputy Premier who are both Nevisian representatives in the Federal Parliament could not put down their politics for a moment and go to the Parliament to celebrate with our youth.
