Dr. Henry “Stogumber” Browne Q.C told a St. Kitts-Nevis townhall meeting last Wednesday that voters should decide term limits of politicians and not the constitution. Browne said that “if a man is doing good, why change him, why put it in a book.”
Dr. Browne added that there was no need for term limits, if the elected representative is working in the interests of the people.
Minister of Health, Culture and Social Services, the Hon. Marcella Liburd shared Dr.Browne’s perspective saying that it is the people who should decide on this matter. According to Liburd, “if political parties wanted term limits, then they should start at the party level by putting it in their own party contribution.
Liburd concluded that this aspect of electoral reform should not be left in the hands of a few people in parliament.
