A.B. de Villiers rescued Tridents Pride of Barbados with a knock of BRIDGETOWN – Tridents Pride of Barbados, led by a knock of 82 off 54 balls by South African A.B. de Villiers defeated St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by 25 runs in their Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 cricket match at Kensington Oval on Wednesday night.
De Villiers hit nine fours and three sixes in his innings which helped the Tridents to recover from 29 for three to reach a challenging 180 for six. Wicket-keeper Nicolas Pooran weighed in with a quickfire 38 off 19 balls, which contained four sixes and two fours while Tridents captain Kieron Pollard contributed 27 off 21 balls.
Left-arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell was the most successful bowler for Patriots with three for 25 but West Indies Under-19 fast bowler Alzarri Joseph caught the eye in his T20 debut. He took one for 30 in his four overs but worried the top-order batsmen with his pace and bounce as he struck de Villiers on the helmet with a bouncer.
In reply, the Patriots were restricted to 155 for eight as Jonathan Carter top-scored with 46 off 38 balls and captain Faf du Plessis made 42 off 34 balls.
There were two wickets each for leg-spinner Imran Khan (2-26), left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein (2-27) and pacer Ravi Rampaul (2-30).
Patriots’ opener Kieran Powell, a late inclusion for Evin Lewis, who took sick after the toss was spun, was unable to bat. He collided with his teammate Jon-Jon Smuts while attempting to catch Pollard on the long-on boundary in the penultimate over of the Tridents’ innings.
Powell had to be stretchered off the field into an ambulance and was treated at the ground. Subsequent reports indicated he suffered a fracture of his collarbone. Smuts was much luckier, escaping serious injury and took Powell’s place at the top-of-the order when the Patriots batted. (EZS)
