Three killed in Central Trinidad

three passed-1PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Three people, including a businessman who was detained in 2011 in an alleged plot to assassinate then prime minister Kamla Persad Bissessar and three senior members of her government, were shot and killed here on Sunday.

Trinidad police have confirmed that Selwyn “Robocop” Alexis, was among those killed during an exchange of gunfire at his business place at Enterprise, in Central Trinidad. Media reports have said that one of the other men killed was an unidentified customer at Alexis’s business, and that the customer’s 10-year-old son was also injured during the incident.

The third man killed is reported to be among those who were engaged in the exchange of gunfire.In November 2011, the then national security minister Retired Brigadier John Sandy said that Alexis and three other men had been detained in connection with the alleged plot to assassinate the then prime minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and three government ministers

The four men were the first persons to be detained by police under the Emergency Powers Regulations of 2011 which authorised the police to keep the suspects for questioning for seven days. Alexis, who was arrested by police on various charges, including kidnapping, was never prosecuted for the offence.
