World T20 winning captain Darren Sammy has been replaced as captain of the West Indies T20 team by Barbadian Carlos Brathwaite.
The all rounder who smacked four sixes in the final over of the world T20 finals in India against England to lift the title is the man who has been recommended by the West Indies senior selection panel for the top job. The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is more than likely to approve the choice of Brathwaite.
The right hander will have his first taste of action as leader when the West Indies tackle India in two T20 matches in Florida on August 27 and 28. The WICB and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently agreed on playing two T20 matches in America at the end of the four-Test series that is taking place in the region currently.
Sammy led the West Indies to the World T20 title but criticised the WICB at the post match conference and this did not go down too well with the WICB. As a result he has been removed as captain and Brathwaite will now take over the mantle of leadership. The St Lucian Sammy who led the Zouks in at the 2016 CPL T20 can now consider his regional career over.
He made an exit with his team from the CPL on Thursday night as the Trinbago Knight Riders defeated them by five wickets in the play off in St Kitts. Brathwaite has little or no experience as a leader and the WICB will hope that he can quickly learn the tricks of the trade with the next World T20 carded for 2018 in South Africa.
The West Indies is likely to be without many of the players who played at the World T20 in India for the upcoming two matches in Florida, as Guardian Media understands that the selectors want to build a new team with younger players, as they focus on defending their title in two years time.
