Speaking to Freedom Fm on Monday, one of the lawyers representing Dr Douglas, Angelina Sookoo said the “Issue here in not about Dr Douglas having two passports but Dr Douglas having a diplomatic passport issued by the Commonwealth of Dominica. The Attorney General Vincent Byron, having conducted some research had indicated that two years ago in April 2016, their records indicated that Dr Douglas travelled on a diplomatic passport obtained from Dominica and as a result of that, the AG is now going to court to declare that Dr Douglas is unfit to be in parliament because the AG claims that that amounts to Dr Douglas being a citizen of Dominica as well as having an Oath of Allegiance to Dominica… even though Dr Douglas on numerous occasions responded indicating that he had never taken an Oath of Allegiance to Dominica and that he is not a citizen of any other country but St. Kitts-Nevis.
Ms Sookoo told Freedom Fm Newsdesk that AG Byron without doing proper due diligence had filed a claim to get Dr Douglas out of the house. Sookoo indicated that the Defense Team for Dr Douglas had provided the court with sufficient evidence including correspondence from Dominica’s Ministry and Foreign Affairs which basically has confirmed what Dr Douglas has been saying, that he had never applied for or obtained citizenship of Dominica. The passport he obtained was given as a matter of courtesy to allow Dr Douglas to travel with the privileges of a diplomat, which was denied by the Tea Unity Administration.
Sookoo said “having filed and seen their response, the AG’s Lawyers requested 21 days in order to review Dr Douglas’ response and to respond to it, this matter should not be in court but should be dismissed.” Sookoo declared.
