The recently concluded CARICOM-US Summit in Jamaica and the Summit of the Americas in Panama provided unique opportunities for nations across the region to comment on the ongoing US-Venezuela dispute.
St. Kitts and Nevis’ Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Mark Brantley, told ZIZ News that the St. Kitts and Nevis delegation also weighed in on the matter as both the United States of America and Venezuela are close allies of the twin-island nation.
“The issue of Venezuela arose in the context of the CARICOM Summit with President Barack Obama in Jamaica and we are satisfied that the position taken by St. Kitts and Nevis, which is that both the United States of America and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela are our friends and that we value that friendship. And as a consequence of that friendship, we call on them both to engage in dialogue to resolve the differences that might have arisen,” he said, adding, “That was indicated in the comments made by President Obama himself.”
“We’re happy with those comments. We feel that there will be dialogue and that dialogue has already started and we therefore look forward to that dialogue continuing as we promote, of course, peace and prosperity throughout the entire region. And so we’re quite happy with what we’re hearing and we trust and hope that the parties can continue and we in St. Kitts and Nevis and the wider CARICOM community make ourselves available, if necessary, to mediate between these two parties, friends, and make sure that we maintain the peace and security of the region” he added.
