NEW YORK, United States, Thursday May 7, 2015 – If Barbadian superstar Rihanna was out to attract attention in her unusual get-up at this week’s Met Gala, she succeeded admirably. The problem was that it was the wrong kind of attention, prompting guffaws, caricatures and memes galore.
Sharing the meme queen honours was Sex And The City actress Sarah Jessica Parker, who looked like something out of a sci-fi flick in a monumental fashion flop of her own.
The Bajan songstress and the American actress soon became the objects of a blitz of fan created memes that quickly went viral on Twitter and Instagram.
Rihanna’s epic fashion fail came in the form of a dazzling canary yellow robe (?), cape (?) or coat (?) with a circular yellow train that all but covered the red carpet at the US$25,000-a-ticket gala.
The 27-year-old American Oxygen singer accessorised her Guo Pei creation with a crystal-embellished headpiece, Cartier jewelry and Christian Louboutin heels.
Instagram user @michaelmajesty, meanwhile, accessorized her outfit with slices of pepperoni, tomatoes and sweet peppers, creating a giant pizza via Photoshop.
Twitter user @ELYSA had the same idea, topping the FourFiveSeconds girl’s train with pepperoni, olives and onions.
Twitter user @zaynsed turned what little was visible of the red carpet into a frying pan, transforming Rihanna’s train into an omelette called “huevos a la Rihanna.”
@jazzonce_ even styled Rihanna’s circular train as a similarly coloured condom, while gossip blogger Perez Hilton jazzed up the image to include The Wizard Of Oz’s Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow walking along the “yellow brick road” of the train.
@YisasChrist compared the singer’s voluminous Giambattista Valli gown from the 2015 Grammy Awards to the Met Gala dress by superimposing Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick Star’s cartoon faces on Rihanna’s head.
The Monster singer took it all in stride, even reposting a cartoon caricature of herself, wearing her bright yellow gown, on her Instagram page.
But while the bright yellow creation was made an object of fun by creative fans, Sarah Jessica Parker’s outfit was likened to fire and all things hellish red.
Twitter user @MissAbbyMcLain noted that the Sex And The City star’s one-of-a-kind Philip Treacy headpiece looked similar to the hairstyle of the cartoon ogre Heat Miser from the 1974 children’s TV special The Year Without A Santa Claus.
@SartoriallyInc described Parker’s headgear as from Dragon Ball Z’s Super Saiyan, while several social media onlookers compared it to the flame emoji.
The actress subsequently took to her Instagram page to write: “Til next year… head to toe, soup to nuts, all of you. X, SJ.”
