Prime Minister of St. Kitts – Nevis Dr. Timothy Harris says that plans to construct a second pier at Port Zante to boost cruise tourism, is under review by the Unity Coalition Government. Prime Minister Harris indicated that his administration won’t be rushed into constructing a second pier.
Back in 2014 former St. Kitts-Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas had announced that the construction was due to start following the signing of a M.O.U between SCASPA and Jay Cashman Incorporated. Douglas said then that the US $31 million cruise pier would be able to accommodate two Oasis class cruise ships, which would result in more cruise passengers coming to St. Kitts-Nevis.
Prime Minister Harris said he would work sagely with stakeholders in the industry to ensure jobs and continued progress in the cruise tourism sector.
Former Tourism Minster Dwyer Astaphan in 2013 questioned the cost to build the pier saying there was a lack of transparency.
The Proposal to build the new pier was advanced by the SKNLP’s then Tourism Minister Ricky Skerritt who touted it would further boost the thriving tourism industry.
