India secured their first Test series victory in Sri Lanka since 1993 with a 117-run win in the deciding match.
Sri Lanka began the last day in Colombo on 67-3, needing a further 319 to win.
Skipper Angelo Mathews (110) completed his seventh Test century and put on 135 with debutant Kusal Perera (70), but the home side were all out for 268.
India’s Ishant Sharma and Sri Lanka’s Dhammika Prasad, Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne face misconduct charges after angry exchanges.
On the penultimate day at the Sinhalese Sports Club, Ishant took a single off Prasad and smacked his own head repeatedly, apparently challenging him to bowl bouncers.
Words were exchanged before Chandimal – who had been fielding at slip – joined in and brushed shoulders with Ishant.
The India seamer had been fined 65% of his match fee for the second Test after clashing with Chandimal and Thirimanne.
India levelled the three-match series in Kumar Sangakkara’s final Test last month and a second successive win in Colombo meant they overturned a 1-0 series deficit for only the third time.
It also gave Virat Kohli a first series victory as Test captain.
“The kind of attitude and the character the team has shown, I’m proud of the boys,” he said.
