Tuesday’s press conference hosted by St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris addressed several important topics including the expected time of completion for the Prosperity Agenda, the latest IMF Report, a boom in the construction sector, achievements in law enforcement and the success of the Sugar Workers’ Restoration Fund payout.
Speaking specifically to the construction sector, Dr. Harris said there has been an upward trend and he credited that growth to heightened activity.
“Construction continues apace without significant stoppage and, for the first six months of 2015, growth in the construction sector was recorded at 12.3 percent. The heightened activity in the sector was reflected by a 97.5 percent increase in building materials’ sales over the comparative period of 2014,” he said.
Making reference to the latest IMF Report, the Prime Minister said the Federation’s growth is of great significance when compared to countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.
“According the latest IMF Report, St. Kitts and Nevis is projected to lead the Caribbean with the highest level of growth at five percent. Indeed for Latin America and the Caribbean, the average growth is estimated at a mere 1.5 percent,” Dr. Harris said.
He added, “I am advised by our Financial Secretary that the IMF’s estimate(s) for St. Kitts and Nevis are quite conservative. And by her own projections, St. Kitts and Nevis will grow this year by 7.1 percent.”
According to Prime Minister Harris, the projected growth is as a result of citizens’ confidence in the Team UNITY Government.
