24 Year Old Canadian Track Star Daundre Barnaby drowned while swimming at a training camp in St. Kitts
Canadian track star Daundre Barnaby drowned in the ocean at a training camp on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, Athletics Canada said.
The track star disappeared while swimming in the ocean with several teammates, and he was later discovered to have drowned, the organization said.
Barnaby, represented Canada in the 400-metre event at the 2012 London Olympics, where he ran the race in 46.04 seconds. He also competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and would have been a potential competitor at the upcoming Toronto Pan Am Games.
“This is such a sad and profound loss,” Athletics Canada CEO Rob Guy said in a news release. “Daundre was an outstanding athlete and an even better young man.”
World Sprint Legend Kittitian Kim Collins took to social media on Friday to express his condolences . Collins said “This is very sad. On all angles. Please everyone. Be careful in everything you do. Everywhere you go. If you visit St. Kitts the Atlantic Coast Is not for swimming! !!”
Around 20 of the country’s elite track and field athletes are at the St. Kitts training camp.
Athletics Canada is sending a grief counsellor to the camp to support Barnaby’s teammates and coaches, and the track team’s head coach Peter Eriksson is also heading to St. Kitts to be with the team.
