Basseterre, St. Kitts (January 23, 2015) – Digicel St. Kitts and Nevis employees & brand ambassadors regularly volunteer their time to work in our communities, promoting values of respect, confidence, hard work and communication. Thursday, January 22, was one such occasion whereby Team Digicel, in its 1st corporate responsibility project for 2015, spent the afternoon at the Industrial Site Day-Care and with much delight, planted twenty (20) trees along the school’s border.
Assistant Supervisor of the School, Violet Bass, expressed joy and appreciation that her institution was selected for this Digicel Community Enhancement Project. With the blessings of the School Board, she explained “This school has been in operation for over 20 years and the plants would definitely help to beautify the playground and add some privacy from the busy road.” Red and yellow ixora plants were therefore the ideal selection as the blooms mimicked the colours of the girl’s tunics and do not produce any needles or thorns which could potentially cause physical harm to the students.
Project Partner Karim Maynard of KM’s Landscaping & Nursery explained that trees not only add to the aesthetics of the environment but also affect our quality of life through our everyday activities, physical and emotional health. He therefore saw the importance of planting trees in schools to help improve the mood and air quality of our Federation’s children.
Executing the day’s tree-planting activity were Digicel staff members, Brand Ambassador DJ Rucas and popular soca artiste Mr. Hype. Class teachers, the school’s security guard and caretaker were also actively assisting to co-ordinate the tiny tots in transplanting the already blooming trees from the pots into the ground and watering them. This outdoor activity was a time of bonding for all involved with the aim of teaching toddlers to care for and respect Mother Nature and the wonderful flowers that it can produce.
The Digicel Family expresses special thanks to the expertise and contribution of KM Services and to our new friends at the Industrial Site Day-Care. In the spirit of volunteerism, we had an extraordinary day in our organizational mandate to give back to our local communities.
