ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC) – Dominica police say they have recaptured a prisoner who had been serving a 40 year jail sentence for murder.
They said Steven Alphonse had escaped on January 27, 2010 when prisoners were engaged in removing coal from a pit.
Alphonse had been sentenced to death in 1993 for the brutal murder of a young woman, but he appealed the case in 207 and the sentence was commuted to 40 years in jail.
Alphonse had escaped lawful custody on two previous occasions, making his way to the neighbouring French island of Guadeloupe during one of these escapes from prison.
Prior to his arrest, Police had described Alphonse as “dangerous”. He is due to appear in court later this week on charges related to his prison escape.
