Former Prime Minister of St. Kitts & Nevis, now Leader of the Opposition Dr Denzil Douglas told an ISSUES audience on Freedom Fm Wednesday, that the Regional Security System (RSS) forces here in St. Kitts & Nevis at the present time are being used by Prime Minister Harris “as a last ditch effort to subjugate the people of the country”, at a time when peaceful protest against victimization and corruption were taking place.
Dr Douglas pointed out that the government is failing and the RSS is in SKN to prop up Dr Timothy Harris, who is the Caricom minister heading the RSS from April 2016- March 2017.
He issued calls to regional and international government to be aware of the use of the RSS in SKN when there is no unrest and destabilization in St.Kitts-Nevis.
“And so I call on the RSS, I call on the governments who have sent troops here to our country. I call on them to pay attention as to how domestic troops are being used in an attempt to subjugate freedom and the peaceful people of St. Kitts & Nevis. I call on the various international governments that are providing support to RSS….. and the European Union providing 1.2 million euros from 2014 asking them to pay close attention in having the RSS here at this time.
We are aware that the US government has given the RSS some 30 million dollars to develop membership programs since the launch of the Caribbean Basin Initiative. We call on the US ambassador in Barbados ….on behalf of our citizens …as to what is the real motive of the RSS in our country at this particular time. “said Douglas.
The opposition leader disclosed that the government was going through a period of instability and that this was accentuated by a declining investor confidence in the country. Dr Douglas said the local security forces were being undermined by the presence of the RSS, as they were doing the jobs of the police and the defence force.
When asked if the reference made by Prime Minister Harris at a recent press conference, that the FBI were here earlier this year to help solve murders, Dr Douglas replied they were not here for that, but for training purposes only.
