Former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas has committed to take under his wing the two-month-old baby of recently deceased Army soldier, Jimmyliah Finch, who was killed alongside her sister on March 1st, 2018.
Dr. Douglas made clear last evening at the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party’s town hall meeting his intention to ‘adopt’ the baby boy, stating that he was drawn to the baby while attending the funeral of the Finch sisters last Friday afternoon. He shared that he was drawn to the baby who was crying at the time.
“A little boy just a few weeks or months old at the graveside, unknowingly seeing his mother being lowered into the grave.”
This reminded Dr. Douglas of his own life, as he, too, lost his mother at a very early age, being just a year old at the time of her passing.
“I didn’t have the privilege of knowing my mother. She died when I was a little over a year.”
He stated that both he and the child shared an additional common characteristic apart from being motherless: they share the same birth date of January 14th.
There and then, Dr. Douglas said he made the commitment to ‘adopt’ the child. Last evening, he reiterated his promise to provide whatever he couldfor the boy in an effort to keep him comfortable, safe, and well guided.
“Whatever I can do to ensure that this child survives, I will do it because you never know what this child will eventually turn out to be.”
