Over 2000 applications have been submitted for compensation under the Sugar Workers Restoration Funds (SWRF) since the opening of the Fund’s secretariat in May in Basseterre.
The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela through Petro Caribe donated $EC16 million to St. Kitts and Nevis for the purpose of compensating former sugar workers for what Prime Minister Timothy Harris has been described as a shortfall in the initial compensation, when the industry closed 10 years ago.
Speaking on Freedom Fm “Issues” on Wednesday Dr. Drew explained that he was unable to assist many of his constituents with the registration process as the form could not be removed from the office.
He revealed that he is suspicious about the SWRF officials going to Tabernacle again. He explained that while he is of the view that the people of Tabernacle deserve their benefits, so too do the people throughout the Federation.
Chair of the Public Relations Committee of the SWRF and the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Clecton Phillip, says the deadline for application is Saturday July 4th. Former sugar workers or beneficiaries who have not yet applied are advised to do so before or on that date.
Also speaking on Issues Hon Marcella Liburd SKNLP chairperson expressed concern that no established criteria have been revealed to the public.
According to Mr. Phillips, no payments have been made as yet. Payments from the fund will begin in September.
Liburd called on the government to extend the registration process.
