Wade was initially signed to play out the final year of his contract with the Chicago Bulls after picking up his player option earlier this offseason. However, after the team traded away all-star Jimmy Butler and committed to a full-rebuild mode, he had a change of heart. Wade worked with the Bulls on a buyout. After giving up approximately $8-10 million of his $23.8 million contract, the two sides came to an agreement.
The buyout allowed Wade to hit the open market to find an opportunity to join a title contender. Reports had him linked to 3 teams: the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs. In the end, he decided that the best fit for him was in Cleveland.
By joining the Cavaliers, Wade is reunited with friend and former Miami Heat teammate LeBron James after 3 seasons apart. The relationship between the two was expected to play a role in Wade’s decision making and it appears that it has. The two will look to get back to their winning ways and hope to win their 3rd championship together, and 4th each.
The one-year deal with the Cavaliers makes sense for the 12x NBA All-Star for a few reasons.
