Freedom Fm Newsdesk has been reliably informed by ACP Ian Queeley that an inquest into the shooting death of Philo Wallace has been set for January 21st.. Seventeen year old Wallace was shot and killed in October 2015 by an off duty police officer during a confrontation in a Charlestown bar.
Attorney General and Minister of Justice Vincent Byron Jr told reporters Wednesday afternoon that the case was being taken very seriously.“We want the people of St Kitts and Nevis , and Nevis particularly, feel we are doing the proper thing that there is going to be no collusion or anything of that nature and that there will be a proper outcome that we hope will be satisfactory.”
Philo’s father and other family members along with the general public have been questioning the delay in holding the inquest to determine if the officer will be criminally charged and they have called for an independent inquiry.
Ruth Powell is the chair of the Save SKN group.“The objection we have to the coroner’s inquest is we feel that there is a possibility of bias, considering that it is a police officer who is involved in the shooting.”
Retired ACP Joseph Liburd has said that in light of the public outcry, an inquest ought to be led by a lawyer from the DPP’s office, and not have the inquest prosecuted by the police
Thursday ACP Queeley told local media that the matter of who will lead the inquest was being discussed with the DPP’s office.
