While thanking constituents of #3 for electing him to Parliament, the Honorable Konris Maynard said he was grateful for the opportunity to represent them.
Maynard said the present Team Unity Government was elected on a mandate of transparency and good governance with respect to being accountable when it comes to the use of public funds.
During Wednesday’s edition of Issues on Freedom Fm, Maynard indicated that media houses were unable to enquire into government expenditure.
Maynard referred to the Public Accounts Committee which is the appropriate legislation to verify and scrutinize the spending of public funds by the Government.
Maynard reiterated that such legislation is mandated by our contribution to impose checks and balances on the abuse of public funds.
“It is over one year now since the Team Unity Government is in power, and the Public Accounts Committee, which was put in place under a Labour Government in 2010, has not been fully appointed and instituted by the Team Unity Government.
Maynard said the Honorable Mark Brantley and Dr Timothy Harris were members of the original Public Accounts Committee. Maynard called on civil society to pressure the government to install the Public Accounts Committee.
“Only then will we see transparency, accountability and true democracy at work, Maynard declared.
