The Minister of Education has confirmed that another school in the rural area also has a mold problem.
The Cayon High School re-opened for the new school year on Tuesday instead of September 2 having been closed while the Ministry got rid of mold in the facility.
Shawn Richards, Deputy Prime Minister confirmed that the Ministry of Education is in the process of dealing with a mold issue at the Estridge Primary School, located in Mansion Village.
“The Ministry is fully cognizant of the issue at the Estridge Primary; we have undertaken tests. We did some further cleaning at the school about a week ago and got some renewed results. Those results indicate there are still two areas of concern. I’m aware that the Chief Education Officer met with the staff of that school on Monday and would have explained the results.
“The Ministry has to undertake further cleaning and in the interim as far as I’m aware the two spaces that were identified as still being in need of remedial work are to be closed off.”
The school, however, remains open.
“The advice from the Bureau of Standards is that if you close those two affected spaces they should not be a hazard to anyone attending or working within the school.”
Exposure to mold can cause a number of health issues such as; throat irritation, nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, cough and wheezing, as well as skin irritation in some cases.
