BASSETERRE, ST KITTS – Parliamentary Representative for Central Basseterre, Hon. Marcella Liburd on Wednesday slammed the Board of Directors of the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis over the immediate dismissal of an officer at the lending institution’s Nevis branch.
“With all the hardship being experienced in the country, people are still being victimized and losing their jobs. The latest victim is Calvin Morton, know as Lord Cam of Nevis, who was employed at the Development Bank and on October 14th, received a letter from Len Harris, the General Manager and brother of Prime Minister Harris,” Ms. Liburd disclosed.
“He was terminated with immediate effect. After 20 years of dedicated service, his letter said that he would be paid the ‘mandatory one pay in lieu of notice. Somebody who has been working for 20 years gets one month’s pay. These people are heartless,” said Ms. Liburd, who added that she hoped that the Development Bank Board chairman, Warren Thompson and other members of the Board are really listening to what they are doing.
“This cannot be right. 20 years of service and sent also on vacation from the next day,” said Ms Liburd, who asked: “what happens to him and his family that he has to take care of. He would have a mortgage to pay. Are they saying that only the family members of the Harris’ must eat and benefit off the revenue from the tax payers of this country?”
Federal Ministers Hon. Vance Amory and Hon. Mark Brantley, Premier of Nevis and Deputy Premier of Nevis are silent on the victimisation the Nevisian-born Morton.
