Mr. Halstead “Sooty” Byron, Secretary General of the Nevis Reformation Party told a Freedom Fm Issues audience recently that at the recent NRP Convention in Nevis, the party amended its constitution to essentially block its candidates from serving both in the Nevis island administration (NIA) and at the federal level.
Byron said that both Nevis government officials Premier Vance Amory and Dr Mark Brantley now serving at both the National and Federal levels, have transferred the government of Nevis to St. Kitts and that is something that the NRP has done something about that.
Premier Vance Amory as Minister of Nevis Affairs in the Federal cabinet of Pm Harris is loyal and accountable to Pm Harris and not the people of Nevis, Byron insisted.
Byron pointed out that the NRP made a very important and significant amendment to the party’s constitution and that candidates cannot be recommended for both local and federal ministerial assemblies, that they would serve in one or the other, and thus they would be loyal to one Cabinet and avoid “double dipping”.
Deputy Chairman of the NRP Carlyle Powell believes that it is not practical for Nevis to be fully governed if Ministers work in both Cabinets. Going forward Powell noted that it was now absolutely clear what the NRP position is on this issue. Meanwhile callers to Freedom Fm’s Issues on Monday weighed in on this matter.
