NRP Senator Carlyle Powell is calling on parliamentarians in St. Kitts and Nevis to continue the discussion on marijuana.
Powell told listeners to Freedom Fm’s Issues recently that it is time to stop running and hiding and deal with the marijuana issue. Powell observed that he is tired of seeing young men hauled before the courts and getting criminal records because they possess “a spliff”.
“I am tired of passing by the court and seeing young men hauled before the court because they had a spliff. I am tired of seeing young men being harassed by the police because the policeman are doing their job, don’t get me wrong the police are doing their job because it’s in the books but when a young man sees a policeman and has a joint and has to swallow it and the police box him and kick him to vomit, so he can get the evidence, something got to be wrong with that. I am yet to hear that one young man who was having whatever he call his recreational drug, his marijuana shoot somebody down the road because he was high, that nobody has linked, nobody has say this is what happen to you when you use weed” said Powell.
Powell noted that internationally the U.S, Canada, Jamaica and now Antigua are relaxing their laws and mindset towards marijuana and it was time for St. Kitts- Nevis to have that conversation towards decriminalization of the herb.
