Parliamentarians in the twin island Federation made their first presentations in the first debate of the new session of Parliament on Tuesday.
According to the order paper only two bills were to be debated while a third was to be giving its first reading.
Speaker of Parliament Hon Franklin Brand set the tone for protocol during the Parliamentary sitting. Things however got heated in the afternoon. Hon Ian Patches Liburd during his presentation was cautioned by speaker Brand for having gone off point during his presentation.
Liburd pointed out that the opposition Senator the Hon Nigel Carty had received duty free concession for a personal vehicle while he was a member of the Denzil Douglas led Labour Party cabinet. Senator Carty then rose on a point of order and noted that Liburd the minister of Energy, Infrastructure, and Post had recently benefited from the same privilege offered to parliamentarians and senior government officials.
It was at the point Liburd was first cautioned by the speaker. However he proceeded to speak about Mr. Carty renting his private property to C G Walwyn while he was the commissioner of police. Moments prior he went off point and dropped a barrage of accusations against the father of Konris Maynard, the Labour Party representative for Constituency #3
Speaker Brand asked Mr. Liburd to discontinue his presentation and take his seat.
MP Liburd is first parliamentarian to be asked to discontinue his presentation in the National Assembly.
