Sunday June 26, 2016): Internationally acclaimed rapper, actor and entrepreneur 50 Cent was arrested by police on St. Kitts early Sunday morning. He was taken to the Basseterre police station for processing after using indecent language on stage, during his hour long performance at the 20th St. Kitts Music Festival where he continually dropped the “F” bomb.
Ironically, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson became popular writing, producing, recording and performing gangsta rap laced with explicit lyrics. Anyone that expected this billboard charted and Grammy Award winning artists to rap clean lyrics all night and not slip into what he’s famous for was fooling themselves.
Although our constitution declares protection for free speech and expression, it is against the laws of the federation to spew profanity in public, especially in the presence of the police.
What’s even more ironic is the uneven justice system that we have here in SKN, where one individual will be taken to jail in handcuffs for swearing “bad words”, while another was taken to the posh Marriot Resort after a rifle was found in his language during a routine search in the departure all R L Bradshaw International Airport.
Meanwhile the Basseterre Magistrate Court will be opened on Sunday at 12 noon for US rap icon Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson to be tried for using indecent language.
Also to go on trial is the rapper’s security guard Bajar Walter, who was charged with using indecent language and obstruction.According to a local media report 50 Cent is being represented by local defense counsel Chesley Hamilton and Marissa Hobson Newman. Both men were granted EC$5000 bail in the early hours of Sunday and released, not before surrendering their travel documents.
Fréedom Fm understands the Sunday opening of the court house is to facilitate the rapper flying out of the country at 2pm to attend the BET Awards Sunday night (June 26) in Los Angeles.
