Members of the parliamentary opposition denied categorically on Friday’s edition of Freedom Fm’s “Issues” that they were invited to Thursday’s formal swearing in ceremony of the new Governor General Tapley Seaton.
All three elected representatives, DR. Denzil Douglas (#6), Marcella Liburd (#2) and Konris Maynard (#3) stated emphatically that they had not received any invitation to the event. Maynard indicated that neither he nor any member of the opposition had received any invitation and said it was the second time they had been snubbed by the Team Unity Government and Prime Minister Harris, who were responsible for issuing the invitations.
Chairperson of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party said it was time to put down the tribal politics and deception and recognize the opposition and the contributions made by the former St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Government to national development. Liburd then reiterated the claim made by Maynard that they had not been invited to the Governor General swearing in and other government functions since the February 16th general elections.
However at Thursday’s Press Conference following a question posed by the media, Prime Minister Harris confirmed that invitations were sent out to the parliamentary opposition. Harris said the usual courtesies; I am advised were extended to all. Such a momentous occasion ought to have had the presence of all members of parliament, the prime minister said.
The new Governor General during the ceremony thanked “all my fellow citizens for the overwhelming acceptance of my appointment, I am truly humbled by their support”.
