Despite Team Unity Government claim of no new taxes Former Prime Minister of St. Kitts-Nevis, now opposition Leader the Honorable Dr Denzil Douglas says that he had warned the people about the deception of Prime Minister the Honorable Dr Timothy Harris.
Douglas speaking on Freedom Fm’s Issues on Wednesday said government officials are going around knocking on people’s door inquiring about rental of their rooms and apartments.
Dr Douglas pointed out that homeowners who are renting properties are now subject to obtain a $500 business license, and the payment of 10% VAT for such rentals, in spite of the assurances given by Prime Minister Harris during the 2016 budget debate, that there would be no new taxes.
Dr Douglas said he had informed the nation that Dr Harris would increase taxed in St. Kitts-Nevis, by adding to the VAT, personal income taxes, or upgrading and modifying existing taxes.
Meanwhile Operation Rescue’s Dwyer Astaphan speaking on WINNFm described the attempt to impose a business license on home owners renting out their apartments as “overkill”.
