Hundreds of workers of the largest resort on St. Kitts who had expressed disappointment and outrage at their employer for not paying them their scheduled salaries on Friday, are today breathing a sigh of relief as they now have received their wages.
Freedom Fm has been reliably informed that workers had not received their wages on the due date Friday. One employee of the St. Marriott who had spoken to Freedom Fm was visibly upset and questioned the decision not to pay workers their weekly wages when they “have bills to be paid, food to buy, children to maintain” and other responsibilities. Its like they just don’t care, the distraught worker said. They did not even issue an apology for their unprofessionalism. Besides an email to the affected employees, the resort did not make any other public statements explaining its reason for the delayed payments to its staff.
On Monday Freedom Fm called Marriott’s Head HR Department, Sharon Bathory to get a response about the non payment to workers but was unsuccessful in getting her. Eventually Freedom Fm spoke to an official in the Finance Department who indicated that all Marriott workers were paid as of Monday 14 th March. He indicated further that it was a “system glitch” that caused the payment not to be made on Friday.
“The annual increase was pushed through the system….but the system did not take it. It was in no one’s interest to delay the payment and so Finance worked hard to fix it. Some workers got paid on Saturday and by Monday all had been paid”, the Marriott Finance official said.
