Basseterre, St. Kitts, 6th September, 2014 (MiyVue.com) – The Sugar Boyz of Team St. Kitts and Nevis showed a more superior class on night two of the CFU football Caribbean Cup tournament when they hammered a listless looking Dominica outfit at Warner Park.
Thousands of fans were on site on Friday (5th September), to witness the carnage meted out by the Sugar Boyz when they scored the highest number of goals in the local leg of the tournament so far; defeating Dominica’s Nature Boys, a whopping 5-nil.
At least three other great chances were also made by the home team but in the end they failed to convert those opportunities to goal.
The first of the five goals was a golden present from Dominica who unfortunately scored on themselves, when #7 Julian wade sent one past his own goalie. Two other goals were registered by St. Kitts and Nevis in the first half of the game, making it 3-nil by half time. In the second half, team St. Kitts and Nevis managed to score two more goals, much to the joy of the fans who began singing and chanting while all along the Iron Band continued its musical marathon.
In a post-game interview, the Captain of Dominica said that his team started off on the wrong foot and conceding a penalty in the first half only made matters worse.
“Although we lost 5-0 we did show some resilience on the field. Now it comes down to the game against St. Lucia… We just need to go out there and get a win on Sunday,” the Captain said.
Jeffrey Hazel, Coach of the St. Kitts and Nevis team, said that the performance by his team was exceptional, adding that his players stuck to the task of wining.
“We went out and scored five goals and this is what we wanted for our fans,” the Coach said.
He added that to keep up the momentum, the team will now review and correct some of the minor mistakes in order to stay on top of the leader board.
Captain of the Sugar Boyz, Atiba Harris said that he and his team will now focus on the game ahead in order to defeat the Golden Jaguars on Sunday.
The first game of the night featured St Lucia going head to head with Guyana. But the team that was considered to be the team to beat was weakened by the aggressive performance of the St. Lucians who managed to get two goals.
The first goal for the St. Lucians was scored by #20, Emmanuel Burton who managed to shoot the ball into the net in the 14th minute of the first half.
The first half of the match ended with St. Lucia 1 and Guyana 0.
As the second half of the game commenced, The Golden Jaguars came out to turn around the game but failed, as two of its strikers missed a number of opportunities. St. Lucia’s strong defense was no match for Guyana who continued to miss shots.
As the game continued and the intensity increased, #16, Jamal Joseph scored the second goal for St. Lucia giving them a much needed victory over Guyana.
As the four teams prepare for the final day of matches on Sunday, St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Lucia are on 4 points each, with both Dominica and Guyana on one point. Given their superior goal average however, St. Kitts and Nevis is now in the top position.
Sunday’s schedule will see St. Lucia and Dominica at 5:30pm and then Guyana against the host nation, St. Kitts and Nevis at 8:30. The two top teams will move on to the semi-final stage of the regional competition.
