Basseterre, St.Kitts (TUCOM):- The recently announced shift in the policy of the USA towards Cuba is welcomed by Team Unity. Cuba and USA have been the subjects of frosty relations for over 50 years with Cuba being the victim of an economic embargo since 1961. It is good that the US sees Cuba in a new light that could bring the dawn of a new age of progressive ideals for both the US and Canada. This is important for tourism, economic development, medical technology and education. We applaud both countries for achieving this historic goal.
“We welcome the announcement that the U.S. government will re-establish diplomatic ties and review the designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism. Such a significant policy shift should over time lead to a better quality of life for the people of Cuba including an improvement in their enjoyment of economic and political freedoms. CARICOM has been in the front of international efforts to bring an end to U.S. embargo on Cuba. This decision vindicates those consistent efforts.” said Team Unity Leader, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris.
President Barack Obama’s bold but constructive move comes some 20 years after the First Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Right Honorable Dr. Sir Kennedy A. Simmonds, established diplomatic relations with Cuba on May 10, 1994.
