Work has resumed on the west line bus terminal on the Bay Road, once again displacing passenger buses.
The reconstruction of the terminal began in October 2019 and according to Minister of Public Infrastructure and Ports Ian Patches Liburd while the new bus terminal would occupy the same physical space, improved features would include increased holding capacity, fully covered facility, comfortable seating and defined passenger holding areas.
The project was to have been completed in December ahead of the busy Christmas and Carnival season however late December an incomplete terminal sans roofing was opened to buses. On Monday however buses arrived at the terminal to meet it closed off once more and many said they were not aware of how operations would be conducted with regard loading and offloading passengers and parking.
On Tuesday afternoon the Traffic Department issued a notice informing of parking restrictions at the bus terminal in order to facilitate the construction work.
Parking is restricted for all private vehicles in that area and only taxis and motor omnibuses will be permitted to park in the terminal. This restriction took effect from 6 a.m. on Wednesday, and will continue until further notice.
While it appears poles have been erected at the site with a view to installing the roofing, Freedom FM was unable to make contact with Public Works officials and Minister Liburd for an update on the project and an estimated completion date.
